The first ‘Earth Day’, April 22nd, 1970, was the same eco-extremist affair that it is today: a whole group of ‘liberal’ people being utterly intolerant about anyone having a different opinion. Of course, this liberal intolerance has spread to every aspect of life, but even today the eco-extremists are an integral part of the whole.
Back in the 1970s, the Great Fear™ was of a cooling earth, produced by evil man putting dirty stuff into Mother Gaia’s pristine atmosphere. Today, the Great Fear™ is of a warming earth, produced by evil man putting dirty stuff into Mother Gaia’s pristine atmosphere. One great shift though has been to move the focus from real pollution, CO, SO2, NO2 (because evil man has actually done a great job here), to fake pollution, CO2. And the eco-extremists have found that fake pollution is a far more potent tool than real pollution ever was.
Here’s a nice take on liberal preachiness and intolerance, 70s-style, from Jon Gabriel.
