Freedom-loving individuals don’t tend to get overly excited with symbolism: they’re usually way too busy enjoying and promoting the pleasure of just being free. Your average socialist, fascist or devout jihadi, on the other hand, tends to enjoy hermetic play a lot more. You know, ‘pulling one over’ on the stupid non-conformist, unbeliever.
From graphic icons such as the Nazi swastika and the Soviet hammer and sickle, to calendar events such as 9/11 occurring on the anniversary of the Muslims defeat on the eve of the Battle of Vienna in 1683, to the quasi-apocryphal Earth Day being celebrated first on the 100th anniversary of Vladimir Lenin’s birth on April 22, 1970.
But symbolism shouldn’t just be for your average freedom-hating malcontents, miscreants, and ne’er-do-wells. Nor does it have to be all hermetic, Star Chamber or lettre de cachet juvenile puerility – it can just be allowing Winnie’s bust to proudly get itself out once more in a public place!
